The season in context
Seven Winners
Following one of the closest championship battles in Formula One history just years prior in 2010, expectations were high heading into 2012. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel returned as the reigning double World Champion, but McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus all appeared capable of challenging for victories in what would become one of the most competitive seasons of the modern era.
The season began in extraordinary fashion, with the opening seven Grands Prix producing seven different winners from five different teams. Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber and Pastor Maldonado all stood on the top step before any driver had managed a second victory, highlighting just how unpredictable the competitive order had become.
